City of Edmonton Archives Launches First Online Exhibit Featuring …

May 10th, 2012

City of Edmonton ArchivesThe City of Edmonton Archives is going virtual with its first online exhibit profiling Edmonton author, artist and archive-advocate Ella May Walker. Key to the city’s artistic and historic communities, Walker was an easy choice for the première of the exhibit, which allows users to navigate through the city’s rich history without paying the price of admission at a museum. After moving to Edmonton in 1920, Walker was a member of the city’s Archives and Landmark Committee in the 1940s and ’50s – decades important to the building of the city’s archives, which now include 270,000 images and six vaults of documents. She died in 1960, but the exhibit hopes to revive interest in her work.

She very topical right now,” says city archivist Kathryn Ivany. Walker is one of the subjects of the Art Gallery of Alberta’s Mistresses of the Modern exhibit.

Walker’s cyber profile invites users to read her biography, experience her art, download excerpts from her novels and read about her efforts to create a culture of historical preservation in Edmonton and see what the legacy of those efforts looks like now. The city’s move online is intended to give patrons faster access to the archives and to provide a narrative to the stories of Edmontonians that raw records couldn’t tell by themselves, Ivany says.

It’s a fun way for people to access information about Edmonton’s history,” she says. “The material is available for them whenever they want it.

The interactive features are expected to be permanent fixtures on the archives’ site. An online home means new content can be added to the exhibits as the city and its stories move forward.

Plans for future exhibits are in the works. Site visitors can expect the next big exhibit to be a guided look at the shanty town that sprung up in Grierson Dump, north of the North Saskatchewan River, during the Depression.

Trade Show Exhibit Shipping Tips | Finance information

May 7th, 2012

Your

costs can dramatically escalate trade show if you just happen to hire inexperienced shipping company to transport to your trade show booth to the conference site. You may suddenly be faced with broken or missing parts, late delivery and a budget that could put your company’s trade show display in total disarray and your job in jeopardy.

Although unforeseen events examined as a major winter blizzard can cause havoc with your tradeshow delivery schedule and budgeting, it is always best to minimize your chances for error by picking the right professional transportation company. If you want your trade show booth to arrive in good condition, on time and within your budgeted allowance, you need to be informed on how to pick the right freight handlers and transportation company. You can take control of your trade show booth’s destiny by becoming fully informed.
Bad weather, causing flight delays at certain times of the year, is a concern beyond your control. But just like you can reclaim lost luggage from an airliner if you have your name tag on it, you have a better chance of finding a lost or misplaced trade show booth element if, for example, you labeled every part of your tradeshow display in advance.

Although GPS technology has been a boon to trade show booths tracking, it can not find what is not labeled. And, since there are so many different people handing the shipment of a trade show booth, there is no guarantee that your trade show exhibit will arrive safely on the other end. You can, however, improve your odds of success by taking steps to insure your trade show display’s safe journey. Thus, the first step is to find an experienced trade show specific carrier.

George Poppe of National Transportation in El Segundo, California, offers the following tips on what to look for in a trade show freight carrier. They are:

first Make sure your transportation company records all of your trade show exhibit information, as search destination, schedule, weight, number of pieces, and exact dimensions of your pieces. This detailed information not only deterministic mines the cost of transporting your trade show booth exhibit to the site but so drayage costs (what the unions charge to deliver your booth from the loading dock onto and off the tradeshow floor)

second Look for a freight carrier that has a good rapport with the unions Sun
your trade show exhibit will be in reliable hands. You are better able to avoid unnecessary charges if your carrier transportation deals regularly with the trade show conference hall unions. Your carrier benefits from knowing the industry well venues – Whether they be the McCormick Convention Center in Chicago, the Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the Santa Clara Convention Center or the San Jose McEnery Convention Center p> 3rd Look for a company that handles transportation a large volume of trade show business. You can get price breaks if your company has multiple cargo or less than truckload shipments to a convention site. An example of what can happen is the recent Semicon West 2006 convention at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco July 11-13th.

Poppe reported that, due to the popularity of this show, his National Transportation Company had to wait in the marshalling yard for 11 hours before delivery at the unloading dock. Because he had three trucks and multiple shipments, he was able to waive the waiting charge fees Which would normally be charged. A less experienced trucker would most likely pass along these charges to the trade show exhibitor. Prices range anywhere from Marshal yard $ 45 -. $ 85 hour

4th Select a tradeshow freight company that has first class communication capability. Check to see if they offer 24/7 contact with a live person, since trade shows are not a 9 to 5 business. So make sure you give them names and contact numbers of your cell phone exhibitor reps on the tradeshow floor. Check to see if the freight company has the capability of sending Internet bills and bill of air in case of air ladings bill is lost and you need a duplicate copy immediately.

Poppe suggests that once you select your freight company , you should ship 7-10 days ahead of your targeted move in date in order to avoid late penalties. And be sure to communicate your trade show exhibit also details with the company you select to do your trade show installation and dismantling. It’s really all about communicating. Remember, do your homework in advance and know what you can do to avoid major mishaps of shipping your trade show booth. By picking an experienced freight company, you can minimize your exposure to Mislaid or damaged components trade show booth and budget cost overruns.

Mistakes You Wouldnt Want to Make When Attending Trade Show …

May 7th, 2012

People may know the reasons why they should attend trade show exhibits. It is extremely beneficial for their business as there are more than enough opportunities that they can get out of attending into it. However, for some reason, they make small mistakes that have tremendous effects sometimes without their knowledge. This is where the problem lies. This can be sometimes unforgivable especially if the only card that you have left is in that event. In order to do stay away from the detrimental consequences that such unfortunate event may bring about, this article will tell you what mistakes you should avoid.

  • Picking the wrong booth size make your booth too small and the people attending the event will not even know that you are around. Make it too tall and its towering height will be intimidating. You need to pick the appropriate size for your booth. A display that stands from 10 to 12 feet will be fine. It will give you enough headroom where you can put your signage so that it will remain striking even if you will look to it from a distance. This will also be perfect as even if the booth is made up from not so sturdy materials, it will most likely support the weight as it’s not too tall.
  • Employing uncommitted staffs employing staffs who don’t share the same ideals and goals you have will only help in pulling you down. You will have to assess how committed they are in helping you carrying out their objectives so that you can be sure that they will be of help in attaining success. This is very important. Always keep in mind that it is the employees especially the ones on the front lines will be imperative to the production of sales. This is because they are the one connecting with the clients who may base their decision to purchase depending on how your employees will treat them.
  • Cluttered display a cluttered booth will drive away prospective customers instead of drawing them near. Even if you are there in their place, you wouldn’t go into a cluttered booth either. Before the venue opens to the public, you just go around the booth and see carefully which objects you think should not be there. If you find something, take it away. Leave only the essential things there. You can also add some things if you think it adds some value. For instance, plants of bundles of flowers will certainly give your exhibit rentals a refreshing look.
  • Graphics without aesthetic display graphics are very important. They can either make you or break you. These graphics will somehow reflect your business, the ethics you are upholding and you as a businessman. The prospective clients will think badly about you if you put up graphics that are mediocre and without a trace of professionalism and aesthetic value. They may not like to make business with you. So don’t take it light. Avoid any type of typographical error in your signage or in your contact details.
  • Not having clear and attainable objectives if you are to make plan, you will need to draw clear and attainable objectives. This will give you the right kind of that you are looking for. If you have clear aim, you will be guided into the right direction. You will know what to do depending on the resources that you have. Determine whether you can attain your objectives in the limited amount of time that you will be in the trade show exhibits. Will that be enough? Do you have sufficient resources at hand?
  • Hiring an unreliable trade show booth rental firm this may be the costliest mistake that you can ever commit. You would lose wads of cash if you are to put your eggs in a basket that has a hole underneath. Make it a habit to ensure the authenticity and observation of sound good ethics before you finalize the transaction and give them a down payment. You also have to understand the terms and conditions before signing over the dotted line.

Knowing these mistakes is very important for you to avoid them and save yourself from unfortunate events.

Blue Acorn wins “Most Innovative Magento Site of 2011” | Blue Acorn

May 16th, 2012

Last month, Blue Acorn received the award for “Most Innovative Magento Site of 2011” at Magento Inc.’s 2nd Annual Imagine Conference in Las Vegas, NV.

Of course, the award was only possible through our client, Reed & Barton.  They are a great example of what we look for in a partner. Their vision and interest in long-term success helped us build an eCommerce site that received a 30% increase in visits and increased total pageviews by 396%, a number we intend to continue to increase as we move forward in this successful relationship.

And to the other finalists, we applaud the innovation and Magento expertise displayed in your sites. Corratech’s work on Ten Thousand Villages and Internim’s work on Warner Bros were both great examples of the possibilities of Magento. Magento is a terrific platform with an array of insightful tools, and we are glad to be recognized as masters in the trade.

“When we set out to find the Most Innovative Magento Site of 2011, our number one priority was finding a site that maximized the possibilities of Magento Enterprise,” stated Jary Carter, Vice President of Magento Global Sales.  “Blue Acorn’s work with Reed & Barton stood out as a site that not only exhibits remarkable creativity and ingenuity, but it also showcases Magento Enterprise features, customizations, and integrations. Although many partners and merchants found creative ways to utilize Magento Enterprise’s capabilities, Blue Acorn’s expertise in leveraging the platform as a central component of delivering eCommerce growth was exemplary.”

Last – but certainly no least – we want to thank Magento Inc. for establishing this award, as it enables agencies everywhere to have the opportunity to be recognized and rewarded for their hard work and dedication to pushing the platform forward.
